IRIUCHIJIMA, JURO, AND HIROYUKI KOIKE. Carotid flow, intrasinusal pressure, and collateral flow during carotid occlusion. Am. J. Physiol. 218(3) : 876-879. 1970.-Bilateral common carotid flow and systemic as well as intrasinusal pressure were observed in anesthetized dogs. Unilateral common carotid occlusion induced about a 30y0 increase in contralateral common carotid flow, mainly due to collateral flow to the occluded side. Based on certain assumptions, collateral flow and collateral flow resistance were approximately calculated. During common carotid occlusion the decrease in intrasinusal pulse pressure was much greater than that in mean pressure. Stimulation of the cervical sympathetics decreased ipsilateral carotid flow but not contralateral flow. However, during occlusion of the ipsilateral common carotid artery, contralateral carotid flow was decreased by sympathetic stimulation. These findings indicate a unilateral sympathetic innervation as well as unilateral flow distribution despite abundant, vascular communications across the midline. Sympathetic stimulation considerably restored the intrasinusal pressure which had been decreased by carotid occlusion, indicating that the site of sympathctic innervation was mostly peripheral to the communicating vessels.

Pressure-flow relations in canine collateral-dependent cerebrum.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The pressure-flow relation has been characterized in normal cerebrum, but it has not been studied in cerebrum dependent on collateral flow. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the relation between systemic pressure, regional cerebral blood flow, and middle cerebral artery branch pressure in collateral-dependent and normal brain. METHODS In 10 anesthetized d...

A Lumped Parameter Method to Calculate the Effect of Internal Carotid Artery Occlusion on Anterior Cerebral Artery Pressure Waveform

Background and Objective: Numerical modeling of biological structures would be very helpful tool to analyze hundreds of human body phenomena and also diseases diagnosis. One physiologic phenomenon is blood circulatory system and heart hemodynamic performance that can be simulated by utilizing lumped method. In this study, we can predict hemodynamic behavior of one artery of circulatory system (...

Semiquantitative evaluation of ophthalmic collateral flow in carotid artery occlusion: ultrasonic doppler study.

The reliability of quantitative evaluation by doppler ultrasound with regard to the ophthalmic collateral blood flow in patients with carotid artery occlusion was estimated. The ultrasonic doppler flow signals of the ophthalmic collateral flow of 54 carotid occlusions were classified into four types and three degrees--high, moderate, and low reversed flow patterns--and were compared with the an...

Collateral development after carotid artery occlusion in Fischer 344 rats.

Mortality following permanent occlusion of both common carotid arteries decreases as the time between the first and second occlusions increases in Fischer 344 rats. Our goal was to examine the possibility that collaterals develop after unilateral carotid artery occlusion. During temporary occlusion of both carotid arteries in nine ketamine-anesthetized male rats, mean +/- SEM blood flow in both...

Recurrent stroke in patients with symptomatic carotid artery occlusion is associated with high-volume flow to the brain and increased collateral circulation.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE To investigate whether the risk of recurrent ipsilateral ischemic stroke in patients with symptomatic carotid artery occlusion (CAO) is related to (1) volume flow in the contralateral internal carotid artery (ICA), basilar artery (BA), and middle cerebral arteries (MCAs), and (2) intracranial collateral flow to the symptomatic side, measured in the first 6 months after th...
